![]() Described by some archaeologists as a collection of villages, the city bustled with activity before succumbing to flooding and rising frustrations between neighbours. ![]() They couple historical descriptions with firsthand accounts from each of these locales, often highlighting the work of anthropologists and archaeologists conducting cutting-edge research into how these ancient societies grew and withered.ĭescendants of nomadic tribes lived from about 7100 to 5700 BC in central Turkey’s Çatalhöyük, one of the world’s first cities. Newitz spotlights four places built up and deserted on different continents over millennia. "Each suffered from prolonged periods of political instability coupled with environmental crisis.” Each one also offers lessons about how to live with other people, how to exist within the natural world, and how to adapt to shifting political landscapes and environmental conditions. The four ancient cities Newitz focuses on "shared a common point of failure," they write. ![]() Those places, however, were more often simply abandoned: "The myth of the lost city obscures the reality of how people destroy their civilisations." ![]() Some archaeologists claimed to have found so-called lost cities covered in sand or vines, a fate ripe for adventure stories and mythology. ![]() “It’s terrifying to realise that most of humanity lives in places that are destined to die," Newitz writes. ![]() ![]() Sophie holds a BA and M.Litt in French and English literature, and a PhD in Creative Practice. Lost Connections Summary ![]() Social prescriptions help people feel valued and connected while medication does not. There are nine main causes of depression, and they all have to do with difficult life circumstances.Depression is not the result of a chemical imbalance. ![]() I learned these 3 powerful lessons from this book: His thoroughly researched and fascinating argument is that the key to treating depression is in re-establishing lost connections in our lives. He uncovers the truth that depression isn’t just a biological ailment, but an environmental and psychological one too. He explores the cutting-edge science of curing people without medication. In Lost Connections: Why You’re Depressed and How to Find Hope, Johann Hari explores the lesser-known side of depression and anxiety. But what if I told you this might not be the whole picture? Most of us accept the explanation that it’s something wrong with brain chemistry. It’s a huge problem, so we must have some sense of what causes it, right? There are many theories, but we don’t know exactly why depression happens, or why it’s becoming more prevalent. And those numbers only seem to be going up. ![]() The World Health Organization estimates a whopping 300 million people suffer from depression worldwide. If you don’t have it, you probably know someone who does. Well, that and being the youngest brother to a rock star. Life after the kidnapping is all I’ve ever known. People ask if I’m screwed up after what happened, and I never know how to respond. This is a show that’s not about death as much as it is about the things around the end of life, and what can’t be taken away: memories, stories, and love. “Love doesn’t die, people do.” Ilonka quotes that Merrit Malloy passage in Netflix’s “The Midnight Club,” and it’s really at the beating heart of Mike Flanagan and Leah Fong's ten-episode adaptation of the work of Christopher Pike in that it’s not just about trying to understand the end of life but using poetry and prose to do so. ![]() |
